You have been chosen to lead as a captain!

You’ve been chosen a Captain by the coach/team or combo of both. They had to think you have the ability to lead. They must have felt you are the one who has the attributes to inspire, share ideas with superior communications skills, form positive relationships among your teammates and help set and strive to fulfill the goals needed for the team to have a successful season.

This is part 1 of 3 series on what it is to be a Captain.

Part One: What a captain is and isn’t

Part 2: the attributes/skills needed and

Part 3: the goal setting and fulfillment

Congratulations you have been named a Captain

  • It’s an honor – the coach and team feels you are the Who to be the leader
  • You have become first a liaison between the team and coach to help set priorities and accomplish them
  • What is the Captain as a Leader of your team?

What Captains are?

Captains/Leaders are INFLUENCERS

The true measure of Leadership is Influence

               Nothing More . Nothing Less.

If you don’t have influence, you will NEVER be able to lead others.

The very essence of all power to influence lies in getting people to participate.

If you can’t influence others, they won’t follow you. And if they won’t follow you, then you’re not a leader- it’s that simple!

To Influence teammates one must

Understand and FULLY know your teammates

So let’s agree what Captains are NOT

Bosses, Dictators, Tyrants, Czars, nor absolute Authority

“He who thinks he leads but has no followers is only taking a walk’

So the challenge is to gain the cooperation of individuals to help set priorities

among the players and realize you have no control over them

How does one develop and influence others to create the relationship necessary to lead

Think of what would it would take for you to listen to someone else – there are different stages

1st   – You follow because you have to

2nd   – Permission stage – you like someone

3rd   – Productive stage- you believe in someone

4th    – Development stage – you trust that person 5th – Personhood stage – you             really feel strongly about that person – you believe in them –    then they will follow
